Hello All.

I have been playing about 2 years now. I started off with 3/6 then 4/8 then I moved to 1/2 (which I play 99% of the time) and sometimes 3/5. Are there any benefits from playing 8/16 to spread limit? I usually do OK playing 1/2 and 3/5 but 75% I leave up only a few bucks $50-$100. I thought of trying 8/16 since I have heard a ton of people say they make decent money out of this.

Is there a difference from 4/8 besides the amount of money? Do people chase as much?

Any comments and suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.

Players are better than 4/8 for sure.

At 4/8 and below, preflop raises are rare, at 6/12 most people understand how to raise preflop.  At 8/16, preflop raises are very common, especially if I am in the game.

Each level you move up, the players appear to be a bit more aggressive then the level below.  Pots can be won with a bluff, but you will do just fine if you attempt no bluffs at all.

Man...

So I went last night and seriously the game is a joke. Made me realze why I don't play limit anymore. EVERYONE chased.

Few examples.

I have K 9 I raise guy calls.

Flop is K 5 8 guy checks I bet, he calls

Turn is a 9 guy checks, I bet, he calls

River is a Q guy checks, I bet, he calls.. WTF?

What does he turn over? J 10!!!! Seriously? What business did he have calling a bet on the flop? How did you think your J 10 is good on the flop? You have no draw?

Lost on that hand.

Next hand

I had A 9 I raise get 2 callers

Flop A 3 6

Checks all around so I bet ( I am last to act ) what do you know? Call, Call

Turn Q check check I bet and what do you know? Call, Call

River 6 Bet, Raise and me I though about it and mucked the hand since I had these donks on a 6...

These people show a 4 6 and other guy a J 6

I mean seriously? Are we playing hit and pair and call all the way???

There were 2 other hands like that when I just decided to get up and move back to a spread game..

seriously, its as if you have some expectation that the players to immediately respect your play/raises.
Most of the players have no clue who you are, or your playing style and ability, 1 session is all it takes for you to make a decision on whether you can beat the game?

Ever heard of a bad first impression? I'm not saying that I can't make money or that it's the worse game ever... I'm simply stating that I would rather stick to playing spread limit.

OH MY GOD!!!! PEOPLE ARE CALLING ME WITH HORRIBLE EQUITY AND SUCKING OUT ON ME.  THIS GAME SUCKS.  I WISH THEY WOULD RESPECT MY BETS AND FOLD WHEN THEY ARE BEHIND.  THEY SHOULD ONLY CALL IF THEY ARE BEATING ME.  THIS GAME SUCKS.  HOW CAN I EVER MAKE MONEY IF THEY NEVER FOLD?????

sigh

8/16 games at CAZ are largely soft.  Playing a fundamentally sound game with a little bit of hand reading skills will win.  If you make fewer mistakes than your opponents you will end up with the money.  I agree that you can maintain a 70% or even higher winning session percentage at spread (or NL). Unfortunately winning 60-65% of limit sessions is the best you can hope for even if you have a big edge against your opponents.  That is the nature of limit poker.

Advantages of limit in my opinion are:

1.  The games are the same as you will find anywhere.  You don't see spread limit in Nevada, California or on-line.  So the skills you develop playing limit here are universal.

2.  The biggest games are limit.  Of course you have to start learning more games than Hold'em but limit games are the biggest most consistent  running games at CAZ.

3.  You won't be bored to tears or want to rip out the vocal cords of your opponents.  Maybe I'm king nit of tight-ass mountain but spread limit is boring as hell and everyone spouts their useless strategy opinions at the drop of a hat.  It shouldn't be called 5-500 spread.  It should be called "Opinions on Spread Limit Discussion Group" (with a couple hands of poker thrown in between).   These guys bitch more that ancient Omaha 8 players!

4.  Crazy loose players loooooooove them some 8/16!  You'll never have so much fun playin' than with those guys.

Sticking with spread or No Limit  has the advantage if that is who you are as a player.  If limit isn't your cup of tea then go with something else for a while.

In the long run it is never a bad idea to have a seat at an 8/16 table at CAZ.  Get ready for a roller-coster.  Like Hunter Thompson says...  "Buy the ticket, take the ride."

^^^Thanks for the reply. It is very usefull. BTW with the pope who got his panties in a bunch. I played 8/16 at gila not CAZ. Not very smart to talk down to someone on a forum that only has a post every few days. At least I am providing some topics in here. Also I will try 8/16 again sometime soon but I feel like Spead limit is my thing. I just played on Monday and walked out up $460 on the 2/250.

GILA 8/16?

cmon over to CAZ and try the 8/16.
