The flies only last for a few weeks.  I think 2 years ago it was like 3 or 4 times as bad as it is this year.  I think it is when they reseed the golf course that brings out the flies, at least that is what I was told 2 years ago.

It may have been even more than a few years ago that the flies were so bad.  Pope is correct they were MUCH worse then than they are now,  comparably its just an minor annoyance at the moment. Not sure what does bring em out , but it seems heat related to me.
