So many times i see other players call a string bet on someone when in reality...it wasn't.

MOST people understand a string bet simply being two motions to the pot.

The reality is a TRUE string bet is an INTENTIONAL attempt to gain information by acting, pausing to see a reaction form other players then attempting to add to the bet.

Calling a "string" is overused as merely a stop loss to save having to put an extra bet in the pot.

I agree, I have even used it, probably unethically, when someone puts 8 chips into a pot when it is a kill pot, which is not enough to raise in a 6/12 chip or 8/16 chip.  At the lower limits where it is a full kill, there is no way they can get around it, because it looks like a call.  But at 20/40 and above, putting 8 chips out obviously means a raise, but if they don't announce raise, you can call a string, since the raise should be to 12, and 8 isn't half of the raise.  It is a slight angle, but it is also punishment for them not paying attention.

Here is one i saw in a 20 game just the other day...post flop UTG bets next to act places 8 chips in the pot in two neat,
even stacks.
One stack is "dirty" and has 3 white chips in it and the dealer immediately begins to correct the bet( raise) when another players hollers "string, that's a string".
2 others concur, you can tell the dealer was thinking "are you kidding me?"it was obvious what the players intent was and explained it to the grumbling players... who still believed they got screwed.

saw this happen over the weekend:
6/12 game gets to the turn card 3 handed
UTG bets, next to act say "reraise"...
third guy in says "you can't reraise, no one made the first raise yet... thats a string"

I kid you not.

are these non-string calls ever enforced?  I think it's fine for people to say string all day if nothing happens...

In the example i gave,  the raise stood...no floor person, just general overrule by the players who kind of jumped on the guy. Probably the majority of the ridiculous ones are overruled in the same way.
Ill bet though that many that shouldn't be ruled a string bet ARE allowed.

I think the dealers should be better trained to recognize a true string and be able to overrule a claim of "string"

CAAZs #1 Card Slinger

Dealers could ALWAYS be better trained Nid.  And we are working on that right now.  The rule at CAZ states that a dealer can NOT call a string raise, only a player may.  The problem is I see this rule overused most of the time and reconstructing the situation to make a decision is always a subjective matter.
